The course will focus on the figure of Socrates within the Jewish philosophical tradition. This legendary figure who has left nothing written, has been though thoroughly portrayed by Plato’s dialogues. Socrates has perfectly embodied the human desire for knowledge, and, since the earliest theological controversies, has symbolised the first authentic free thinker as well as a victim of social and religious intolerance. From antiquity to this day the Athenian sage has been assimilated to a program of “reason and virtue” and became a paradigm of critical thought as well as a spokesman of universalistic human values, celebrated with great enthusiasm especially during the Enlightenment.
The course intend to offers an overview on the way Socrates’ philosophical experience developed through Platonic philosophy has been interpreted and celebrated by Jewish thinkers from antiquity to contemporary philosophy. Like a journey through history of philosophy the course’s goal is to examine Socrates’ image offered by some specific voices of Jewish thought: the middle-age philosopher Jehuda Halevy (1075 or 1085- 1141), the early modern Venetian rabbi Simone Luzzatto (1583 ca.-1663), the well-known philosopher Moses Mendelssohn (1729-1786), key figure of the Jewish Enlightenment, up to the great German philosopher Hannah Arendt (1906-1975).
The goal of the course will be to explore the many implications involved within the use of Socrates’ image by Jewish authors: What does it mean to speak through the mouth of Socrates, a pagan? What is his role within the frame of the struggle between philosophy and revelation? What political issues concern the reference to Socrates, as “ideal” thinker and citizen? To which extent may it be connected to the struggle for Jewish emancipation?
