Das Seminar ist nicht für den Freien Wahlbereich anderer Studiengänge geöffnet.
Kommentare/ Inhalte: Most political science theories assume either rationally-instrumentalist or normative drivers of politically relevant behavior, with a few employing hybrid models that combine the two in different ways. In this seminar we will review the main assumptions and expectations of each approach and will explore their relevance and possible interaction in a number of empirical, real-life situations. Readings and applications will be drawn both from the social sciences and from institutional economics which has long explored the role of norms as well.
Lernziel: Students will be equipped with the theoretical wherewithal to make informed arguments about the relationshipp of rationalist and normative motives of behavior in their own work.
Vorgehen: All principal interaction in the course will take place through MS Teams, an online collaboration platform available to all UHH students free of charge (instructions on installation etc. - alas, only in Geman - can be found here: https://www.rrz.uni-hamburg.de/services/kollaboration/microsoft-teams.html, please contact me if you need help in English). In addition, a WhatsApp course group will be used for more immediate communication on seminar and current topics.

For each session there will be a set of assigned readings, guiding questions, and tasks that need to be fulfilled (such as writing brief memos, recording a podcast etc.) to get credit for the course. During the course's original time slot we will explore forms of live discussion using MS Teams and the instructor will be available for questions.

The syllabus has been finalized for the first six sessions; midpoint during the term we will review what tasks and forms of interaction have worked well and which ones need to be changed or improved.
