Kommentare/ Inhalte:
The Anthropocene is a concept that implies fundamental changes: How do we understand nature-society relations, when ‘man’ has become a geological force? How do international politics and the ideas of governance, power or democracy change, when questions of extinction and survival become the ‘new normal’? Can ‘we’ govern at all, when facing ecological catastrophe – or should we rather turn to un-governing? And indeed: is there an universal ‘we’, if ecological catastrophes and its repercussions affect the Global South in a much more severe way?
Initially this seminar introduces the concept of the Anthropocene and draws on debates in the Earth Sciences. We then consider perspectives from the field of Environmental Governance, such as the ‘planetary boundaries’. This is followed by several critical readings, such as post-/decolonial perspectives, indigenous perspectives and more-than-human perspectives. We will definitely not end with wrap-ups and solutions, but possibly (mild) irritation and hopefully gain a clearer perspective regarding power and domination over nature.
Lernziel:
Understand key concepts and main controversies about the Anthropocene and relate this to international politics.
Vorgehen:
In the first session key debates on the Anthropocene are introduced and discussed. We then focus on several more specific aspects regarding ethical controversies, postcolonial perspectives and even some art and sci-fi approaches. Our seminar is based on weekly readings. To develop a common understanding and lively discussion, students are required to hand in several short summaries. Furthermore, there is room to do a number of presentations. We will do some group work in the course and welcome 1 or 2 scholar activists to the seminar.
Das Seminar findet in digitaler Form in der Lernplattform OpenOlat statt und folgt z.T. dem didaktischen Konzept des Flipped Classroom. Dort finden sich Seminarlektüre, Videos, Infos zu den einzelnen Seminarterminen, Leitfragen für die Arbeit an und mit Texten, ein Diskussionsforum. Regelmäßige Zoom-Sessions ermöglichen Austausch innerhalb des Seminars, regelmäßig eingestelle Screencasts fassen Textinhalte zusammen und reagieren auf Diskussionsfragen.
