Kommentare/ Inhalte:
This course is about ethnicity and its role in politics. We will ask and answer questions such as: What is ethnicity? Are ethnicities biological realities or socially constructed? How does ethnicity matter for politics? How is democracy shaped by the ethnic composition of a country, and what are ethnic alliances and ethnic entrepreneurs? What is ethnic violence and ethnic war, and why do people fight along ethnic lines? Apart from addressing these substantial questions, we will explore how ethnicity and its impact on politics can be studied empirically. How can we measure ethnicity, and what type of designs can we use to establish that ethnicity caused a political outcome? And can politics alter the way ethnicities are perceived?

Lernziel:
1) Understand the nature of ethnicity and its role in politics,
2) Be able to define the conditions under which ethnic differences become salient for politics;
3) Develop an understanding for the ways as to how the causal effect of ethnicity on political outcomes (and vice versa) can be measured.

Vorgehen:
Each session centers around a theme that is covered by 1-2 text(s) that all students will have read. The core reading(s) will be supplemented by short student presentations on closely related topics (e.g. a case study or a text applying the same theory to another case) and brief lectures by the instructor. By means of brainstorming sessions, group and plenary discussions, and debates, we will develop a common understanding of the session's theme.
