Urban public transport systems in Southeast Asia are historically diverse. They are made up of informal (paratransit) and formal transport modes, ranging from rickshaws to metro-systems. World-famous are some of these transport-modes like Bangkok’s Tuk-tuks or Manila’s Jeepneys, providing transport as well as identity. Latest revolutions in SE-Asian urban transportation and beyond are triggered by ride-sharing services like Grab, Gojek or Uber, providing not only transportation, but food and other deliveries up to financial services.
In this seminar we are looking into historical developments of (region-specific and global) transport modes, examining their advantages and disadvantages in a systematic and analytically clear way: not limited to technical aspects, we asses them in social, environmental, economic, historical terms, and beyond.
The lectures will be delivered in English, but the students may respond and ask questions in German. The student is required to actively participate in the lectures, and prepare the readings to be discussed in class. In general, these readings are analytical articles about the topic of the week. The student is required to present a topic in the module assigned to him or her in the beginning of the semester and/or write an essay on it.
