Kommentare/ Inhalte: Unlike youth (often portrayed as rebellious), childhood is not one of the central themes of modern Indonesian literature. This notwithstanding, there is a corpus of texts which take up the fact that we all come to this world as a child. With the family and the environment as a place of primary socialization, these texts depict the special world of a/the child, tell us of relationships to parents, the effects of a joyful or distorted childhood, or undertake a literary confrontation with the circumstances, experiences, and expectations of a bygone time. Taking into account the temporal distance when authors speak about the times and experiences of childhood, the literary depictions of children can show us individual perceptions as well as persistent or changing cultural attitudes. Further aspects may be pregnancy and parenthood. The findings will be discussed against various theoretical backgrounds (esp. literary and media studies, anthropology, gender studies).
