In times of internet, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, etc., our visual perception is constantly challenged. Yet visual representations are part of the social discourse: In Asia-Pacific, in Europe and globally. They tell us something about ourselves and about others - they are part of global communication. We learn about images because they affect us affectively, emotionally and intellectually and at the same time they are part of cognitive processes as constructions of the other, of nature, of the self and of a social or societal environment.
What kind of representation prevails and how and what we see is strongly socio-culturally and historically mediated. Our current image of Asia-Pacific has its origins in colonialism and post-colonialism, which remain powerful, symbolic systems of representation and are reflected in visual culture. Or in other words, this domination is culturally consolidated and justified. We want to reveal the racist and social hierarchies encoded in colonial and post-colonial films and photographs, the ways in which colonial systems of representation still shape the images and general understanding of Asia-Pacific, shape identities and self-images on the ground and are present in today’s mass media. Special attention will be paid to gender representation. The continuity of the ideological programme, which refers to the connection between culture and domination, will be discussed.
The fact that the imperial past is not yet over is visible in many contemporary cultural products, e.g. in photo books, in journals, magazines, in YouTube and documentary films, on calendars and much more. This will be analysed and be made public in a film evening with sample films and an exhibition at the AAI.
