Kommentare/ Inhalte:
In this course we study global health and its politics. We start by considering the world’s most pressing health problems and how these have been tackled historically. We then take a closer look at the core actors in global health - governments, international organizations, and private foundations - and their respective roles. In order to better understand why global health is intrinsically political, we take a look at several case studies: the polio vaccine rollout, and the fight against HIV/Aids, Malaria, and Ebola. The rest of the course is dedicated to individual topics such as health and poverty, and health and violent conflict. Throughout, we focus on methodological aspects and ask: How can we know if health policy measures actually work?
Lernziel:
1. Develop an overview of the key global health problems and the different actors that shape global health politics.
2. Understand how social, political, and economic conditions shape health outcomes and the access to healthcare.
3. Develop an understanding of the interrelationships with other global problems: poverty, violent conflict, and climate change.
4. Development an understanding for the ways as to how the causal effect and effectiveness of health-related interventions can be measured.
Vorgehen:
Each session centers around a theme that is covered by 1-2 text(s) that all students will have read. The core reading(s) will be supplemented by short student presentations on closely related topics (e.g. a case study or a text applying the same theory to another case) and brief lectures by the instructor. By means of brainstorming sessions, group and plenary discussions, and debates, we will develop a common understanding of the session's theme.
