The lecture presents an introduction into the fundamentals of criminology. Next to an
overview of criminology as a special subject area, an exposition of early criminological approaches
(classical and positivistic school) as well as modern perspectives (biological theories, psychological
theories, socio economic macro perspectives) followed by an introduction to problems of official
crime statistics and research into the „dark field“ number, the lecture centers on modern and
contemporary core theories of criminology according to their basic assumptions and key statements
supplemented by a discussion of empirical evidence.

Basic knowledge of criminology; ability to identify and contrast basic
assumptions of important criminological theories
