Comments/contents:
The objective of this course is to provide students with substantial knowledge about the use of qualitative methods to understand social phenomena. On the one hand these insights are important for preparing research projects as for example master thesis. Particularly research in the area of Corporate Sustainability and Responsibility often uses qualitative methods in order to understand these socially complex phenomena. On the other hand, the competence to conduct and analyse qualitative data is also gaining increasing attention in management practice. The competence to systematically analyse qualitative data is of utmost importance to draw meaningful conclusions out of interviews and observational data. In this course students will be introduced into the philosophy of science as background for understanding qualitative methods, they will learn how to ask qualitative research questions and the respective methods to collect and analyse data. To deepen this theoretical knowledge students conduct their own research project including the selection of a research question and the collection and analysis of data.
Didactic concept:
The focus of this course is centered on interactive elements and the research project. Depending on the number of students, participants are allocated into groups to conduct their own research project. Thus, the lecture provides students with the necessary theories and tools they can afterwards apply in their own research. The individual steps of the research project will be systematically discussed in round tables as part of the tutorial, where students receive feedback on their research question, research design, data collection method as well as on their data analysis.
