Comments/contents:
Speech is arguably the most natural and most important way of human communication. But also for human-machine interfaces speech control is recently getting more and more important. Speech communication devices like smartphones, assistive listening devices, hearing aids and speech-controlled assistants enable or facilitate the human communication with the help of modern speech signal processing algorithms.

In this lecture, we apply signal processing concepts to speech signals. We thus learn to understand principal algorithmic speech processing concepts in smartphones, hearing devices and speech-controlled assistants.

Signal-related foundations of
- Speech production
- speech perception,
- speech analysis,
- STFT, LPC, cepstrum
- speech enhancement
- speech coding
- automatic speech recognition

Recommended Prior Knowledge:
Basic knowledge of signal processing is helpful. For example via the Bachelor-Module 64-236 "Digital Media Signal Processing" the  Master-Module 64-350 "Multidimensional and Multimodal Signals", or similar signal processing courses.

Learning objectives:
Students will be able to
(a) explain the foundations of speech production, perception and analysis,
(b) understand the mathematical and information-theoretical principles of speech signal processing, and
(c) apply the studied methods to explain the working principle of practical speech signal processing systems.
