Comments/contents:
Society has not yet found a satisfactory way to manage crises. Projects for the future, such as the Green Economy or the European Green Deal, are based on a high level of consensus. However, many measures meet with resistance when it comes to concrete implementation on the one hand. On the other hand, they are seen as a continuation of the crisis-prone system, which is unable to solve the "economic-ecological pincer crisis." Currently favored alternatives largely pursue concepts of green growth. These seek to harness the innovative power of capitalism to reduce environmental consumption. The project seminar examines different research questions on contradictions, potentials and alternatives of a sustainable society in the context of a capitalist economy within the framework of research projects. In doing so, students implement self-formulated specific questions, methods and work programs that they have developed in the summer semester of 2022.

Learning objectives:
Students should learn to work on a research topic in a project-based manner, to record the state of research and to identify relevant developments, debates and research gaps. From this, they should derive a workable research question and hypotheses, develop a research design and systematically subdivide the chosen topic into work packages. Students will select, acquire and apply appropriate methods and learn to analyze and interpret results. They should take a reasoned position on the research subject and relate the results back to the scientific discourse and train scientific working methods.

Didactic concept:
In the project seminar, students will actively conduct their own research. In the first part of the seminar (SoSe 22), the participants have determined the focus on capitalism and sustainability as an overarching theme and have formulated their own project design on a specific research topic under this focus. This includes formulating a research question, a literature review, determining a methodology, and a work plan. In the second part of the course, students will progress their project and present interim results (science communication, a simulated conference paper, final report). Depending on the approach, the methodological and theoretical elaboration will be discussed in the seminar and exemplified by individual projects.

Literature:
Literature recommendations on the overarching question were announced at the beginning and in the course of the seminar. Students use specific literature depending on the project.

Additional examination information:
Type of examination: project report
Evaluation scheme: graded (RPO)

Deadline for project reports: end of March 2023
