Kommentare/ Inhalte: This class is geared towards doctoral students who are interested in discourse analysis. In a series of three-hour seminar sessions this class will discuss leading theoretical approaches to discourse analysis and their application in selected cases. To that end, the participants will present their methodological chapters, including their research question and research operationalization for discussion in class along with a detailed assessment of the respective empirical case studies. In addition each presenter will select a theoretical text for all participants to read in preparation of each seminar discussion. The class is meant to provide an interactive learning environment on the doctoral level in support of the preparation and conduct of empirical fieldwork, as well as the evaluation of the collected data (text corpus).
Vorgehen: Work load - Regular participation - Reading of selected texts and chapters of dissertations - Presentation of methodological chapter/s (drafts must be circulated one week in advance of the in-class presentation)
Literatur: Central authors discussed by the class include: • Texts by Austin, Foucault, Garfinkel, Gadamer, Glaser & Strauss, Searle, Wittgenstein and Wodak among others; As well as • More recent work by Doty, Escobar, Fierke, George, Hansen, Huffschmid, Krause & Williams, Laffey, Milliken, Weldes & Saco and Wiener among others. It is possible to invite some of the authors for a seminar session.
