Important: The full course will be in English (Material, slides, lectures). However, questions can be asked in German, and exam can be written in German.

This course is for students who are motivated to learn how to make good and intelligent decisions, in the work environment, but also in many other contexts. The opportunity to learn will be highest when actively participating in the sessions. Each session will be a mix of case discussion, theory and group interaction.

In the sessions, each time a stand-alone topic within decision science will be dealt with. Topics will be:

  • Intuitive versus rational decision making
  • Logical derivations for decision support
  • Optimization thinking within constraints
  • Process improvement logics
  • …and other related topics

No prior knowledge is required in the fields of statistics or mathematics. However, a sound interest in quantitative approaches will help. It will not be required to do any (advanced) calculations or statistical test, but the course contains elements where your rational and logical thinking will be triggered. Even when quantitative methods are not your interest field, this course will be the best opportunity to get acknowledged with it is a very simple way, and with many practical examples. It will help you to see the ‘use’ of these methods, in day-to-day professional life.

The goals of the course are that…

  1. … students learn to recognize situations in which they could and should apply data-driven and/or logic supported reasoning.
  2. … students are able to apply basic rules of thumb and heuristics in coming to better and rationally supported decisions.
  3. … students build up theoretical knowledge on basic behavioral processes in decision processes.
  4. … students become aware of own strengths and weaknesses in rational and in intuitive decision making.
