Kommentare/ Inhalte:
International Relations (IR) theory has become a heterogeneous field. While introductions to IR are still organized along the lines of grand theories (like realism, neoliberal institutionalism, liberal theory, constructivism), this demarcation of the field no longer depicts the ongoing theoretical innovation. Recent debates have raised questions for new paradigmatic challenges (like post-colonialism or the Anthropocene), the disciplinary boundaries of IR (e.g. with regard to international law, sociology, history) or focused on analytical concept discussed in neighboring fields (like practice, materialism). In addition, since the world is currently challenged by a row of catastrophic events (increase of ongoing violence, post-factual populisms, etc.), IR can impossible remain silent with regard to the corresponding issues.
Lernziel:
The aim of the seminar is to consider these more or less recent debates, which in the usual course of university seminars are not systematically addressed. In particular, we will address topics like:
- IR norms research
- Practice theory in IR
- IR and transnational legal pluralism)
- IR and history
- New materialism in IR
- IR and migration
- Postcolonial IR
- Normative challenges to IR in a world out of joint
By no means is this list meant as being exclusive. A more detailed syllabus will be generated during the first two or three session of the semester.
Vorgehen:
Working groups of students will be expected to take responsibilities for the organizations of sessions on a particular topic and to prepare a "questionaire" during the semester.
Working language can be English or German (or both) – depending on the constellation of participants.
