Kommentare/ Inhalte:
This class will discuss recent debates in international relations theory (IR). These debates include major theoretical shifts in IR that have had, or are likely to have a lasting impact on how we international relations are approached.

To that end, the seminars will focus on the following themes:
- the "constructivist turn" (1990s)
- the "practice turn" (2000s)
- the "normative turn" (2010s)

Each theme reflects changes in the way real world international relations are perceived by students of international relations. As such, this perspective represents a reflexive understanding of academic enquiry: real world changes and theoretical change are interrelated. For example,
- the constructivist turn involved studying the role of norms - such as human rights, democracy and the rule of law - in international relations;
- the practice turn has brought the role of habitus and discursive practices to bear in studies of diplomacy, foreign and security policy and other areas; and
- the normative turn reflects an increasing necessity of democracy, justice and fairness in the global realm.

All three take into account the effects and trajectory of globalisation and regional integration and the respective impact on political and social relations beyond the modern nation state.

Lernziel:
- generate an understanding for reflexive approaches to the social sciences based on the experience of recent debates in the subdiscipline of international relations theory;
- provide a facility for interdisciplinary academic work;
- demonstrate the role of theory for understanding and explaining social change;
- establish a sound understanding of the major moves in international relations theory on an international scale, yet
- offering insight into culturally distinct approaches to theorising and theories in the social sciences

Vorgehen:
The class is divided in three broad stages:
- 1: Information
- 2: Exploration
- 3: Discussion
The first stage consists of lectures, data-collection, and media research (30 min lecture, 60 min research).
The second stage involves problem-oriented learning in work groups on each of the three "turns" (open laboratory for Q&A regarding group work with the Professor).
The third stage involves presenting the research results and discussing the outcomes in class (presentations in class with discussion).
