Kommentare/ Inhalte:
This class addresses European Integration Theories (EIT) in order to scrutinize the theoretical concepts and analytical standards presented by major theorists over the past five decades. By employing the method of problem-based learning, students will critically approach these key theories asking questions about the implication of five decades of European integration on current politics and society. In project groups, students will address progress and problems of European integration with reference to key concepts of stateness such as, for example, responsibility, sovereignty, morality and legality. To do so, each project group will create a research log and raise their own research questions which will guide their contribution to in-class debates, and group presentations.

Lernziel:
Successful participation in this class will provide students with central theoretical and analytical skills that are required in order to understand and explain European integration from a succinct theoretical standpoint.

Vorgehen:
This is a theory class works with the teaching method of problem-based learning (PBL). Students will be guided in their explorations of theoretical arguments, concepts and applications. Through project group work and guided discussion in class students will learn how to conduct research independently and how to derive leading research questions. The teaching consists of lectures, independent group work, critical discussion and group presentations. The reading list consists of suggested core readings, which must be read by all students. Further reading lists are generated through the project group’s respective independent research.
