Information and knowledge can be communicated and processed using different modalities, such as

  • Language in spoken or written form, as monologues or in dialogues, …
  • Depictions: Images, diagrams, map etc. in static or even dynamic variants
  • Gestures, mimics, etc.

The lecture focuses on multimodal communication based on language and – at least one – additional modality, e.g. multimodal documents combining text and graphics or spoken presentations accompanied by pictorial material, such as slides or black-/white-board.

Major perspectives of the lecture are:

  • Overview on phenomena and models considering the individual communicational modalities of language, depictions and gesture, and the interactions among these modalities in multimodal comprehension and production
  • Multimodal human-computer interaction, in particular the design and realization of multimodal interfaces for the interaction of humans and computers / robots
  • Processing multimodal documents: intelligent information retrieval, image and video retrieval

Stichworte:

Communication, Multimodal interaction, Crossmodal integration, Human-Computer-Interaction, Human-Robot-Interaction, Intelligent information management

Lernziel:
Advanced knowledge of concepts and methods in the language-related areas of human-computer / robot interaction. Insight in the ways how these methods can be applied in realistic scenarios. Preparation for a M.Sc.thesis project concerning the subjects knowledge processing, language processing, computational vision, robotics, human-computer interaction.

Vorgehen:
Lecture: Slides in English. Lectures in English (in German, if no participants with preference for English participate; final decision on this topic in the first lecture. Oral exam in English or German (due to the option of the individual candidate)
