Theories are necessary to make sense of international politics because they provide the conceptual tool-box through which research is able to handle "reality". But because "theory is always for someone and some purpose" (Cox 1982), this course takes a critical stance towards theorising. It does so by adopting a "lense" of texts of popular culture.
The course offers an introduction to theories of international relations based on a contrasting reading of popular culture. That is, the course will make use of recent film and fiction to reflect upon theories of international politics. Analyses of film and narrative allow for a critical reflection of recent theoretical debates by highlighting "hidden assumptions" which make theories convincing and appear to be true.
Lernziel:
By the end of the course students will be familiar with prominent theoretical positions in International Relations. They will have gained knowledge about key concepts and methodological approaches. In addition, the format of the course enables students to critically reflect upon the underlying premises of the theories and assess their truth-claims.
Vorgehen:
Sessions will include group presentations based on a contrasting reading of IR theory and recent film and fiction. The presentations serve to highlight and expose underlying premises of recent theories and key concepts of the discipline. While this may include familiarising yourself with the respective film or narrative, it should go without saying that any "Lektürekurs" involves the intensive reading of chapters and articles to be able to contribute to in-class discussion. Seminar texts are almost exclusively in English which is also the preferred language of instruction.
