Postcolonialism and postcolonial studies have a long tradition in different academic fields. Although the exact meaning of the term is fiercely debated among scholars of different fields, its usefulness with regard to social theory is uncontested. Notably, postcolonial studies entail a variety of academic fields, epistemological and ontological debates that are not limited to a particular set of theories and methodologies. Though, in most general terms, postcolonial studies seek to dissect how power relations are constructed between different actors in the world. In particular, the discursive construction of social reality is of central importance to postcolonial studies. Hence, while important authors have formulated their contributions to the field of postcolonial studies based on the insights of Marxism and (post-)structuralism, it is not limited to these sets of paradigms and rather offers a greater pool of thinking tools. Yet, within IR notions of Postcolonialism have rather limited influence on major paradigms. However, since emerging debates on modernity, global history and the evolving debates about the making of the international system, IR scholars invoke insights from the various disciplines advancing postcolonial critiques. With the critique of a historical paradigms, such as Realism, IR is more open to the complexity of global history and a de-centered view that includes the interaction between European and non-European people.

Lernziel:
The goal in this class is threefold:
1) This class seeks to introduce main themes and issues of Postcolonialism raised by important authors of the field. This will allow to get the main insights into the field as well as basic concepts.
2) With this basis, the class will analyse the different contribution within IR in order to see how it has influenced work of scholars in this field.
3) With this basis, the class seeks to evaluate whether Postcolonialism is a useful approach to contemporary global politics. In that regard students will develop their own project and case studies.

Vorgehen:
The course is based on discussions and active engagement by students. Hence, a good command of required readings is necessary. The discussion in class will be conducted in different forms – in smaller work groups and with the group as a whole – and framed by group presentations of 30 min, including discussions (Studienleistung) and a written assignments (Prüfungsleistung). Students will not only work with basic understandings in this field of study but also engage in current events enabling them to identify contemporary problems and puzzles.
