Kommentare/ Inhalte:
The discipline of International Relations (IR) Theory traditionally has focussed on states and institutions, such as international organisations, courts, and other collective actors. Yet, we have witnessed a humanization of international relations (the field of study) and international law. This humanization manifests itself in a variety of areas, such as the development of international criminal law, the protection of fundamental and human rights, the Responsibility to Protect, and the individualisation of warfare. In this course we discuss these developments and turn to IR theory for insights.
Lernziel:
At the end of this course students will have
1) A good account of current debates in IR Theory regarding humanization and human beings.
2) Gained insights into contemporary practices and developments in international relations and international law in a variety of fields.
3) Be able to critically reflect on IR Theory as a field of study.
Vorgehen:
The course is based on compulsory reading, discussions, and active engagements by students. Group presentations, smaller work groups, lectures, as well as discussions with the whole class will structure the classes.
