The occurring digitalization of our society introduces novel applications and imposes new requirements on Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) which can not be met with traditional mouse and keyboard interaction. In this master project, we develop natural user interfaces (NUIs) using future-oriented technology based on virtual reality and augmented reality head-mounted displays, such as the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive or Microsoft Hololens, as well as tracking systems such as the Leap Motion, Intel RealSense or Microsoft Kinect. All the hardware and software technologies in the laboratory of the HCI research group will be available to the students during the master project.

The goal of the master project is to develop an innovative novel NUI technique using one or multiple of these technologies. The teaching staff will provide the participants with the opportunity to gain insights into current research directions, as well as to participate in advancing knowledge in the research direction of NUIs. At the end of the master project, the participants will have the opportunity to submit their solutions to a scientific conference in the form of a research paper.

Lernziel:
The learning objective is that students are able to complete computer science tasks by applying theoretical and methods knowledge gained during the Master’s studies of Informatics. They have completed the typical phases of iterative software development cycles in a small team. The students gain corresponding professional qualifications. They know recent developments in a specialist field of Informatics, have problem-solving competence, and can autonomously complete scientific tasks under supervision.

Vorgehen:
Development process:
The students will address a challenge by developing a NUI in small teams (2-5 participants). During the introduction sessions, the students will be given an overview over different research directions and challenges related to the fields of virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), 3D user interfaces, and (multi-)touch interaction. The students will be given the opportunity to decide on a project and to form a small team to develop a solution over the course of the project. The development work will be supported by means of human-centered development approaches.

Laboratory:
The display and tracking technologies in the laboratory of the HCI research group (room H-100) can be used by the participants during the course of the master project (see links below). The students will get hands-on experience with professional laboratory equipment including stereoscopic displays, tracking systems, and high-end rendering workstations.

Language:
English and German.

Requirements:
Programming skills (C#/Java/C/C++).

Preparation:
The Unity3D engine will be used for the development in the project. The engine comes with a versatile API in C# to script the interaction processes. Please download the free Unity3D engine and complete the training tutorials.

Additional information:
The project goes over two semesters and will be continued with 2 SWS in the next winter semester. The results of the project will be presented in an integrated seminar in the next winter semester.
