Kommentare/ Inhalte:
This interdisciplinary course provides an in-depth introduction to the international politics of West Asia and North Africa (WANA), commonly known as the "Middle East". The engagement with crucial empirical understandings of the region including transnational ideologies (e.g. pan-Arabism, pan-Islamism), international conflicts (e.g the conflict in Israel/Palestine), the relation between globalisation and regional politics as well as contentious politics frames the basis for critical reflections of existing IR theories. The fact that many theories in the social sciences, especially in the realm of International Relations (IR), emerged in a “Western” context whereas the “Middle East” served as a ‘testing field’ for dominant IR concepts will be a particular challenge within this class. Hence, alternative approaches for an enquiry into the complex interactions in the area will be discussed. Beyond the focus on key concepts of international relations, their relation to themes such as Islam, gender, fundamentalism, civil society and the colonial legacy among others will be examined. Accordingly, the course introduces students to the classical and more recent theoretical debates at the nexus of IR and WANA.

Lernziel:
By the end of this course students will be able to critically reflect on theoretical approaches as well as comparative paradigms and their application in regard to the politics of West Asia and North Africa (WANA). Further, students will be able to analyse relevant interactions and actors in and beyond the region in a comparative perspective depending on the particular context of a case. On the empirical level, students can identify the relevance of political cultural as well as historical contexts, normative frameworks and the meaning of reality as a social construction (e.g. the colonial construction of the state system in the region). Accordingly, the course aims to establish a critical awareness about the relation between empirical understandings and theoretical frameworks as to highlight how both elements shape the perception of the other which eventually indicates the role of the researcher.

Vorgehen:
The course is based on discussions and active engagement by students. Hence, a good command of required readings for each session is necessary and a precondition for a successful course.  The discussion in class will be conducted in different forms – in smaller work groups and within the group as a whole – framed by small presentations and short written assignments. Students will not only work with basic understandings in this field of study but also engage in current events enabling them to identify contemporary problems and puzzles. This syllabus provides a substantial reading list and a list of important sources which should and can be used as a basis for discussion in class and further research. In particular the section on recommended readings is helpful as well as the general reading list. In cases where book chapters are required readings for a session, the convenor seeks to ensure that they will be provided on Stine. In all other cases students are expected to know how to find electronic articles and use the various search tools available at the university and their libraries. Please also note that online tools will be used to prepare sessions and facilitate communication in class. Details will be explained in the first session.

A detailed reading list will be provided at the beginning of the course. The mentioned literature below is a general reading list covering some of the key concepts and main arguments in the field.
