Kommentare/ Inhalte:
This seminar focuses on the emergence of global norm conflicts. We will especially address the cases of the norms of torture prohibition and the prohibition of sexual violence of women and girls during wartime. Students will learn how global norm conflicts emerge based on local contestations of breaches of norms. The seminar will discuss the relevant approaches in International Relations (IR) theory. Here, the literatures on Global International Relations (Global IR) and norms studies will be read in more detail. Over the course of the seminar, we will discuss the core tenets of the emerging debate on Global IR and examine recent efforts to take a plurality of affected stakeholders into account. A key question will address the agency of the governed and their access to contest the norms that affect them in global society. Central agents in this regard are social movements, peace movements, feminist advocacy networks, and strategic litigation networks. In the seminar’s first part, major theoretical debates are introduced and discussed. In its second part, and based on the idea of 'problem oriented learning' (POI), students work in small groups to prepare theory-led presentations of research problems that emerge as particularly relevant in the context of our debates. The presentations will help students to frame and focus on study projects which may lead to their BA dissertation proposals.
