Contentious Politics can be observed in various historical episodes and in different regions around the globe. The “Arab Spring”, the protest following the “Euro Crisis”,  the “Occupy Movement” or the G20 protests are just some of the more recent and visible examples. As such, it has drawn the attention from scholars of Social Movement Theory, Security Studies and politics in general due to its different forms and contexts in which Contentious Politics have occurred, ranging from “quiet encroachment” to protests and resistance. Different authors have pointed out that Contentious Politics also become increasingly important for international politics with processes of globalisation. However, international relations scholarship has rarely engaged with Contentious Politics as they take place beyond settings more familiar to IR, such as international organisations, conferences or diplomacy. Accordingly, this course seeks to engage with several important questions: First, how can IR theory account for processes of Contentious Politics and how can Social Movement Theory help to develop insights for IR. Second, how can IR scholarship develop methodological tools in order to analyse Contentious Politics. Thirdly, what are the limits of Social Movement Theory given that much of the work focuses on Western experience of movements? What are the normative puzzles in doing research ‘about’ movements: are social movements always good (for democracy)? How should researchers account for their normative positions between themselves and research object?

Lernziel:
This seminar is substantially based on active participation and project work of the participants. Students will (a) get an in-depth knowledge about different strands and perspectives on Social Movement Theory and Contentious Politics and its relation to IR. They will (b) further develop an understanding for methods in order to operationalise the analysis of Contentious Politics. This will ultimately (c) allow for a critical engagement with existing perspectives and theoretical approaches in IR and Social Movements.

Vorgehen:
The course is based on discussions and active engagement by and with (fellow) students. Hence, a good command of required readings for each session is necessary and a precondition for a successful course.  The discussion in class will be conducted in different forms – in smaller work groups and within the group as a whole – framed by small presentations and written assignments. Students will not only work with basic understandings in this field of study but also engage in current events enabling them to identify contemporary problems and puzzles. This syllabus provides a substantial reading list and a list of important sources which should and can be used as a basis for discussion in class and further research. In particular the section on recommended readings is helpful as well as the general reading list. In cases where book chapters are required readings for a session, the convenor seeks to ensure that they will be provided on Stine. In all other cases students are expected to know how to find electronic articles and use the various search tools available at the university and their libraries.
