Kommentare/ Inhalte:
Building on what students have learnt during their previous courses on qualitative social science research, the course will specifically further students’ ability to conduct interpretive research in the discipline of International Relations (IR). It refreshes students’ knowledge of the generic social science research terminology and provides an overview of some of the most pertinent qualitative methods used in IR to analyse textual as well as visual data. The ultimate aim is to provide students with a hands-on research experience, that is, equip them with a methodological toolkit, which enables them to reflexively design and conduct their own research project in the study of international relations.
Lernziel:
- Profound knowledge of epistemological presuppositions and ontological assumptions underlying interpretive philosophies
- Advanced understanding and knowledge of the relevance of post-positivist and constructivist theory for a given set of methodologies and methods used in the discipline of IR to study specific social phenomena
- Ability to critically read and evaluate scholarship from a range of methodological approaches
- Ability to reflexively apply theoretical and methodological approaches to a concrete research problem in the context of team work over the course of the semester, leading to a (jointly produced) research proposal
Vorgehen:
The course is organised in three phases. During the first phase students enquire into the basic building blocks underpinning qualitative research. Here, they are familiarised with different modes of theorising and logics of enquiry, and specifically learn about the ontological and epistemological presuppositions of interpretive and relational approaches in IR. In a second phase, students are introduced to a range of basic research strategies and methods as to learn how to approach a research problem and access sources of data. Building on the previous two phases, the third and final phase allows students to develop their own research project, apply one of the methods learnt to a specific research object and evaluate their research findings. To this end, students are given the time to analyse their data by way of independent study and/or teamwork outside the classroom. The semester ends with in-class (team) presentations of preliminary research findings in the form of research proposals.
