Nowadays democracy is roughly conceived as a form of government in which the many rule either directly or indirectly by electing representatives who are accountable to them. This modern conception is the result of a long historical process, which incorporates both political and theoretical developments, not to mention the sacrifices of innumerable people inspired by democratic ideals. In this seminar we will trace the origin of democratic ideas in ancient Greece, their re-emergence in the works of late medieval and early modern European thinkers as well as the theoretical contributions that influenced the establishment of modern democracy in the 18th century. Special emphasis will be given to the two revolutions that took place during the above century and provided democracy its contemporary form and justification. In other words, we will try to understand how democracy came to be understood as representative, constitutional, parliamentary and liberal. In this context we will discuss excerpts from classic and modern authors alike (Aristotle, Marsilius of Padova, Montesquieu, Paine, Sieyes, Madison and others).
Lernziel:
Students are expected to familiarize themselves with the complex interplay between democratic ideas and political institutions especially in classical Greece and in America and France during the last quartet of the 18th century. They are also expected to understand the meaning of core democratic concepts like popular sovereignty, political equality, separation of powers, representation, rights and accountability.
