Kommentare/ Inhalte:
What is the international system, how is it structured and what are its driving forces? Who are the relevant actors and what motivates their behavior? How can we explain international conflicts or breaches of international norms – but also international cooperation or compliance? And how do scholars of international relations attempt to answer these questions?
In this advanced master’s class, we will analyze how these questions are being tackled from different theoretical perspectives. In discussing the classical theoretical canon – realism, Marxism, liberalism, constructivism, poststructuralism – we will systematically focus on the theory’s methodological foundations, its current applications, and political implications.
Lernziel:
The class aims at refreshing and deepening your knowledge of IR theories and illustrating their empirical and political relevance. You will be familiarized with theories as well as with theory-led research to enable you to develop your own research ideas.
The target group of the course are students of the master’s programmes who have already obtained some knowledge in International Relations theories and are interested in their varieties and applications. The class will be held in English, so the ability to read, discuss and write in English is a prerequisite.
Vorgehen:
Please be aware that the 4-hour course will take place biweekly on Wednesdays 2-6 pm. Starting on 25 October 2017, the other dates will be 8 November 2017, 22 November 2017, 6 December 2017, 20 December 2017, 17 January 2018, 31 January 2018.
Our sessions will be based on an interactive method of teaching, which means a mix of inputs given by me, plenary discussions, as well as longer working groups slots and presentations. A thorough preparation of the readings is absolutely required to make sure that every student is able to take an active part in the discussions and to contribute to the working groups.
