Kommentare/ Inhalte: Normative theory is central to all aspects of our lives. It is concerned with how we ought to evaluate, decide, and act as individuals and as institutional actors, how society ought to be evaluated and organized and how we ought to decide and act as collective agents, and even how we ought to acquire knowledge. Moral norms, legal norms, technical norms, and epistemic norms guide our everyday behaviour and interactions. Normative Theory thus crosses the disciplinary boundaries philosophy, political science, economics, and law.

As part of developing the research and teaching pro le in normative theory at Universität Hamburg, four professors working on di erent dimensions of normative theory in philosophy, political science, law, and informatics have come together to form the Normative Theory Group.

The aim of the group is to offer a platform for research and advanced research-driven teaching in all aspects of normative theory with a particular focus on current problems of society.

Starting in Winter Semester 2017–18, the group has organized a regular interdisciplinary research colloquium in which recent work in normative theory in moral and political philosophy, ethics, and law will be presented and discussed. The colloquium combines talks from the four professors, external guests, and reading and discussion sessions.

TARGET GROUP: MA and PhD students of philosophy and MSc PEP students.

Philosophy (MA) students
The colloquium can be attended as an element of the modules MA1, MA2, M3 (as an accompanying course (Begleitveranstaltung) or as a core course (Kernveranstaltung).
Accreditation/Assessment: You will have to attend all sessions, write an essay (accompanying course) or seminar paper (core course) and give a presentation at a separate workshop session. Students who receive a place should contact Prof. Braham to indicate whether they plan to attend the colloquium as an accompanying or core course.

MSc PEP Students
The colloquium can be taken a philosophy elective (6 ECTS).
Accreditation/Assessment: You will have to attend all sessions, complete a 5000-word seminar paper on a topic agreed with Prof. Braham, and present the paper at a separate workshop session.
Registration: Please register by e-mail to Prof. Braham (matthew.braham@uni-hamburg.de) and via STiNE. Please note that as this is an advanced research-driven course you will have to discuss your participation and research interests in advance with Prof. Braham.

PhD Students
