Kommentare/ Inhalte:
Scholars of International Relations (IR), International Political Theory (IPT) and International Law (IL) often appear divided with regard to their respective research objective, question and methodology, despite using a common academic language. This observation is puzzling in light of rising calls for interdisciplinary collaboration in many of the leading journals in either discipline such as e.g. International Organization, Review of International Studies, European Journal of International Relations, or Global Constitutionalism, among many others where – increasingly – interdisciplinary texts emerge (compare e.g. Crawford, Finnemore and Toope, Hurd, Reus-Smit, Krieger and Nolte, Oeter and Wiener). Against the backdrop of cross-referencing which occurs quite regularly, the benefits of interdisciplinary collaboration are often blurred.
The class will address the value-added of collaborative interdisciplinary research between law and political science. To that end, students will focus on selected interdisciplinary readings that have been considered as ‘classical’ readings and ask whether there is genuine potential? Students will approach cross-referencing across disciplinary lines (i.e. IL and IPT) as well as across the distinctive logics of inquiry (i.e. problem-based or critical research). They will consider that as regards internal diversity, inter-disciplinary difference is enhanced based on the respective diversity of approaches that exists internally, for example, regarding doctrine, paradigm or approach which often involve distinct epistemological standpoints and relatedly, different ontological preferences. All of these contribute to a richness in diversity that is reflected and constituted by intellectual trajectories which set the background for the choice of research question, object(ive), and methodology (compare e.g. Jackson, as well as Haverland and Yarnow).

Vorgehen:
The class is based on the method of problem-based learning which stresses collective and interactive learning, and project related work inside and outside the classroom. Students will continue to work in small groups, in direct discussion with the professor, or in interactive in-class discussions which include lectures, student presentations, group work, critical discussion and round-table debates. The teaching and learning tools include work with PPTs, audio-video material, the IT and common library research.

Literatur:
* A selection of core readings will be offered with the class outline. It is each student’s responsibility to catch up with the level background in IR theory required for this class.
