Contemporary Debates in European Integration Theory
INHALTE:
This introductory course is about both the politics and theory of European integration since the early 1950s. Its main aim is to familiarise students with the development and institutional framework of the European Union (EU) as well as with current problems and challenges, which the EU is facing. Starting with a historical overview of the early years of the European Communities, the course subsequently covers the EU’s key institutions and decision-making processes in view of the EU’s current legal framework. Based thereon, we will then look at the way in which major theories of European integration seek to grasp and explain the EU’s current debates and challenges, such as increased politicisation and contestation of the EU polity, the EU’s multiple crises since the Euro crisis as well as debates about the EU’s differentiated integration and its potential disintegration.
Lernziel:
- Acquire basic knowledge of the history and theories of European integration
- Become familiar with the EU’s key institutions
- Demonstrate ability to think critically about the EU’s development, state of play and future development
- Approach a subject area based on a ‘real-world’ problem
- Become competent in asking questions and develop a research puzzle for a variety of different topics
- Be able to define tailor-made learning objectives to solve a specific problem/puzzle
- Be skilled to chair and lead a session, based on previously defined learning objectives
Vorgehen:
This course runs on a bi-weekly basis, with two individual sessions each time the class convenes. The course adopts a problem-based learning (PBL) approach, in which small groups of students are in charge of defining the learning goals and running the seminar sessions, especially by chairing the individual sessions. The course coordinator will take on a supporting role as to help groups achieve their determined learning goals. While the first sessions are intended to familiarise students with the PBL approach, later sessions will apply the PBL-method full-on. The seminar is rounded off by a round-table debate or plenary discussion in which the different groups compare their individual results.
