Kommentare/ Inhalte:
In recent years, in the wake of an increased global interest in non-Western political thought ("Comparative Political Theory"), Chinese authors have carved out a significant space for a distinctive Chinese perspective within international discourses in political theory and political philosophy. This perspective is premised upon the ongoing Chinese engagement with international theories of social modernity, including controversial understandings of “Chinese" and "Western" modernity. Since the 1990s, the rapid transformation of Chinese politics, society and economy was accompanied by highly contested claims to the normative relevance of the Maoist heritage, the imminent dangers of a legitimation crisis, but also to the need to strengthen the rule of law. In addition, a freestanding discussion has arisen over the normative merits of key Confucian and other traditional terms. Not only have authors attempted to induce a re-evaluation of Western understandings of values like political equality and autonomy, they have brought forward substantive conceptions of good governance, meritocracy, "just hierarchy", and harmonious international order. In order to understand these recent developments, it seems necessary to put them in context with 20th century, especially post-WW II developments in Chinese political thought. Last but not least, a profound understanding of contemporary Chinese political thought cannot be achieved unless one takes its factual political context, the role of intellectuals/theoreticians in Chinese society, and some of the peculiarities of Chinese political language into consideration.

Lernziel:
Orientation about Chinese contemporary thought in comparison with Western sources on the same topics (Meritocracy, Equality, World Order) and the capacity to reflect critically on both in a comparative manner.

Vorgehen:
This seminar will discuss primary and secondary sources with a view to commensurating them with contemporary Western political theory and political philosophy discourses. Participants will be Masters Students in Politics and in Sinology. Prof. Dr. Thomas Fröhlich and Prof. Dr. Peter Niesen will teach the course as an online seminar. We will make use of the OpenOlat platform to distribute texts and stage discussions. Regular student inputs and more general synchronous discussions in online meetings.
