But not only the recent pandemic but also the acceleration of the climate crisis, the floods witnessed in parts of Germany or the increase in refugee movements across the globe challenge established ways of coordinating and organizing. Managing large scale crises is a huge challenge for organizations and effective crisis management is becoming a key capability. Drawing on contemporary organization theory, this course aims to illuminate latest research on coordinating in crises, on how to prepare for crises and how to communicate effectively during situations of crises. Building on the extensive literature that explores how organizations manage unexpected events reliably, the course seeks to develop an understanding of how coordination and communication in crises unfolds.
