Kommentare/ Inhalte: The course will first briefly introduce the global monsoon system and discuss various monsoon definitions. Focus will later be laid on the Asian (summer and winter) monsoon systems, especially on the circulation characteristics, their centers of action, and the related thermal-dynamical processes. Key elements of the Asian Monsoon (AM) systems such as the Tibetan Plateau topographic forcing will be discussed in detail, along with a literature review on the AM and the Tibetan uplift. Another focus is to introduce students the latest research progress on the AM system, in terms of its interaction with climate models like ENSO and MJO (Madden-Julian Oscillation) and its evolution in a warmer climate.
