Kommentare/ Inhalte: The course will first explore the meaning that the concept of impression management has in the work of Erving Goffman. Afterwards, the term will be used to analyse everyday situations with regard to the participants' impression management. Based on these insights from the sociology of interaction, the bulk of the class will discuss changes in the transformation from face-to-face to digital impression management for different interaction contexts. Empirically, a focus of the class will be on interaction in online teaching in higher education, drawing on all participants own experiences over the course of the pandemic. Additionally, the students are welcome to come up and work on examples from their everyday and professional lives throughout the semester.
Lernziel: Students will be familiar with Goffman's terminology and sociology and will critically and comparatively discuss and analyse theoretical texts in an English seminar discussion. The participants improve their oral and written sociological competencies and English language skills through a short input presentation including chairing a seminar discussion, a short term paper and if applicable the writing of a written term paper.
Vorgehen: The course combines classic theoretical readings with the analysis of the COVID-19 induced transformation of interaction contexts from face-to-face to digital. The students propose a digital interaction context of their choice, review the literature on this topic, and prepare and chair a seminar session about it. The seminar will mainly take place in the form of moderated sessions. Based on a joint learning objective planning with the lecturer, two students prepare a short input to induce a plenum discussion or group work (not a lengthy presentation) and chair the seminar discussion. This formats trains skills that prepare for many professional contexts. Participants are expected to thoroughly read the literature, to continuously participate in the seminar discussion and group works and to prepare a seminar session including input presentation and written elaboration as a short term paper.
