In the Interdisciplinary Seminar “The Economics and Politics of Climate Change“ we will approach climate change and climate crisis by intertwining economic and political perspectives. We will examine socio-economic root causes of climate change as well as various approaches to mitigate climate change or adapt to it. We will zoom in on emissions trading, discuss phenomena of green financialization, learn about the institutional settings of global climate governance, just to name a few issues. This seminar is driven by a problem-based approach and is in large parts student-led. Two introductory sessions will inform about key background knowledge and recent debates in global climate governance and climate economics. The following sessions will concentrate on important research questions, which are taken up in student papers. This will allow you to train your research, writing and presentation skills. Each session offers the opportunity for up to four students to present their research paper drafts and receive feedback from the audience.

Lernziel:

Develop a fundamental understanding of climate change’s political and economic dimensions; learn about key debates; develop own research ideas; practice research, writing and presentation skills.

Vorgehen:
In two introductory sessions (24.4. and 08.05. 2023), we present the seminar topics and plan, the evaluation criteria and hints for writing term papers and presentations, and give topical introductions on the Politics of Climate Change and the Economics of Climate Change. This is followed by interactive formats to develop own research questions. Distribution of topics will follow via e-mail. Students then study the relevant literature for their topic in-depth and prepare a term paper. First drafts need to be ready to be shared with a fellow student one week in advance of the presentation slot, such as to enable them to prepare a discussion (co-presentations). In four block sessions, students present their seminar papers and hold the co-presentations. The final deadline for submitting the term paper is August 31, 2023 (23:59).
