Sustainable urban transport will be a focus of the seminar "City and country rankings in SE-Asia and beyond". We will start defining sustainable urban transport in general, and what quantitative and qualitative indicators can be applied to "measure" it. Then, we will apply these indicators to the land transport system of Singapore, and compare it with other metropolitan areas in SE-Asia and beyond. Comparing urban transport systems will bring us to further approaches of ranking – among others – liveability of cities, and freedom of societies – and respective methodologies applied. Against these backgrounds we will compare selected urban transport policy approaches, transport-developments, and evolving transport systems of different metropolitan areas in SE-Asia. This comparative approach will highlight the pros and cons of different approaches pursued in cities across Asia.

The lectures will be delivered in English, but the students may respond and ask questions in German.
The student is required to actively participate in the lectures and prepare the readings to be discussed in class. In general, these readings are analytical articles about the topic of the week.
The student is required to present a topic in the module assigned to him or her in the beginning of the semester and write an essay on it.
Furthermore, the student participates in the seminar-evaluations.

Objectives:
Further developing capacities for analysis, reflection, establishing thesis and defending them, i.e. training research and presentation-skills
Understanding methodological approaches for comparing transport modes and their implications for social, environmental, economic, and political aspects
Understanding interdependencies of urban form, densities, urban transport, and historical developments
Knowledge of the unique geographical, historical and political situation of Singapore as well as other metropolitan areas in Southeast Asia
Understanding core aspects of sustainability in urban transport
