In this seminar we will focus on the Jewish Averroists of the 13th and 14th century. The members of the Jewish Averroist School among whom are Samuel ibn Tibbon, Shem-Tov ibn Joseph Falaquera, Moses Narboni, Joseph ibn Caspi, Isaac Albalag, and Isaac Polqar, sought to reconcile between their rabbi – Maimonides, and the Aristotelian authority of the Middle Ages – Ibn Rushd, the Muslim philosopher. The main purpose of the Jewish Averroists was to philosophically interpreting Judaism in light of Averroes’ commentaries on Aristotle’s writings. Unpredictably, their interpretation often embraced Averroes’ point of view, while esoterically rejecting Maimonides’ skeptical approach toward Jewish principles.
