Kommentare/ Inhalte:
National and international courts are powerful political actors. Increasingly, societies rely on courts to settle political debates, a process known as judicialization of politics. The goal of this course is to expose students to a variety of topics related to how judicial and legal institutions shape political and economic life, focusing mainly on democracies. Topics we will discuss include:

- basic definitional and conceptual issues: what is a court? what is a constitution?
- legal systems: what types of legal systems exist and how do they emerge and develop and affect political and economic life?
- separation of powers and judicial independence: why would politicians provide for/maintain/abide judicial independence?
- organization of courts and judicial behavior: how do intra-institutional rules influence judging?
- gender/race/ethnicity and justice
- courts in autocratic systems
- international courts (such as the European Court of Justice)

Lernziel:
- understand what (international) courts do and how it affects policy
- recognize differences between legal and judicial systems and understand their consequences for economic and social life
- discover the influence of international courts such as the ECJ on national policy-making
- learn about different types of research designs in comparative politics

Vorgehen:
This course will be held entirely online via the platform Zoom. Each week we will have a course session of roughly 60 minutes. During the seminar sessions we will discuss the required readings with a focus on the common theme behind the assigned literature.

The readings cover a wide methodological range with an emphasis on (quantitative) empirical analyses. Although we will focus on theoretical arguments and the research design of the assigned literature, basic statistical knowledge (e.g. a t-test, regression) and the willingness to engage with quantitative research will be helpful. Prior knowledge of legal issues is not necessary.

Most sessions will include a student presentation about a court or a related judicial controversy from different countries.

The academic literature of the course will be accompanied by podcast episodes, newspaper articles, video clips, etc. that highlight and discuss a related topic or a specific case.
