Kommentare/ Inhalte: Persistently low levels of inflation despite extremely expansionist monetary policies in many advanced economies challenge our understanding on how the price level is determined. A non-orthodox attempt to explain price level and inflation is the fiscal theory of the price level (FTPL), which has developed over the last 25 years. The lecture presents a state-of-the-art exposition of the FTPL.
Lernziel: Expand the macroeconomic understanding of how monetary and fiscal policy interact and how this may impact on the price level and its changes.
Vorgehen: The lecture is given digitally. Videos of the lecture will be made available for download on https://lecture2go.uni-hamburg.de/. In addition, the lecture slides will be provided on Stine. There will, however, be interactive parts of the lecture. These will take place via Zoom. Students will be informed (by email) several days in advance of an interactive Zoom-meeting. The time slot for interactive parts of the lecture will always be during the regular lecture slot Thursdays, 12.00-15.00 hours. Students will have to solve exercises during interactive meetings and, of course, may pose any question which may have come up when listening to the lecture videos. Students are encouraged to indicate by email when they feel they have questions to pose. Apart from that, interactive sessions will be scheduled in proportion to the amount of exercises provided in the lecture slides. Students should make sure that they read the emails sent via Stine timely and thoroughly.
