Today, firm of all kinds—including traditional manufacturing firms, those that extract resources, a huge variety of new start-ups—are tackling the massive challenges of sustainability. For some, this shift offers new business opportunities, for developing new products, for reinventing old ones, or for solving problems through business model innovation. For other firms sustainability puts their business model under pressure and solutions for new paths are far from obvious. Thus, understanding and addressing sustainability in businesses is of key importance for long-term success and competitiveness.

The course will discuss real-world sustainability challenges in the environmental (e.g., planetary boundaries), society (e.g., labor standards in global supply chains), and economics (e.g., limits to growth). Translating the challenges of the sustainability dimensions – environmental, social, and economic – to firms and management decisions, the course will address questions such as: What are main motivations for corporate sustainability? What are future business opportunities and risks? How can firms undergo change at the pace needed to create a more sustainable world? Is there a business case for sustainability (win-win situations)? Where do firms face trade-offs when addressing sustainability? What are basic strategies for sustainable business practices? How can we apply these in practical situations?

Lernziel:

  1. To learn about the sustainability dimensions – environmental, social and economic;
  2. To learn about challenges and opportunities for companies dealing with sustainability – drivers for action and the business case for sustainability;
  3. To learn about business approaches to engage in sustainability matters, including stakeholder management, sustainability marketing, and sustainable entrepreneurship.
  4. To apply solution-oriented thinking in practical, case-based tutorials.

Vorgehen:
The entire course and tutorials are based on virtual learning and exchange. We will use the following websites and software for the lecture and tutorials:

  • Stine (course overview, scheduling, and general messaging as well as course materials, including PDFs of lectures, tutorial assignments, and student presentations)
  • Lecture2Go (for MP4-versions of lectures)
  • Zoom (for virtual classroom, e.g. introduction to course, guest lecture, student presentations during the tutorials, and recap/Q&A round of course at the end of the semester)

For the lectures, we will limit virtual classroom* to the following weeks:

  • Week 1 (Nov. 2, 2020) – Introduction to the course with Prof. Busch and Dr. Johnson
  • Week 7 (Dec. 14, 2020) – Strategic sustainability management with Guest Lecturer (to be announced)
  • Week 14 (Feb. 15, 2021) – Recap / Q&A of course

* The virtual classroom will be set up via Zoom links, sent out via Stine messaging a week beforehand. For most of the lectures, the presentations will be uploaded early in the week. Two versions of the presentations will be available to download: video in MP4-format (via Lecture2Go) and PDF version (via Stine).

For the tutorials, two different groups will meet live via Zoom every other week*.

We will go through five case studies on the following subjects: environmental sustainability, social sustainability, sustainability management, sustainability marketing, and sustainable entrepreneurship.

  • For Group 1 – tutorials begin Nov. 12, 2020
  • For Group 2 – tutorials begin Nov. 19, 2020

*Please check the scheduling for exact group times in Stine.
