The Coronavirus pandemic has an effect on how we work together, share and generate novel ideas. Home office, digital work, remote meetings, virtual and hybrid teams are the new forms of work that affect in-house innovation efforts. These new forms of work are a challenge for all organization members to integrate their diverse know-how, to tackle highly interdependent tasks and to share responsibilities by balancing paradoxical frames such as remoteness-closeness, rationality-emotionality, or control-empowerment. However, the process of creating novel ideas is often unpredictable, uncertain and quite chaotic. Managing and organizing innovation requires processes and practices that turn collections of creatives into creative collectives.

In this seminar, we address the following questions: How do we stimulate teams to generate novel ideas and overcome the challenge of not being physically in one place? How do we collaborate effectively at a distance without being hindered by less commitment and barriers of knowledge sharing? How do we design our creative forecasting to implement the “best” ideas and make our innovations successful?

We analyse and discuss recent research studies (see examples below) and identify major challenges. We explore the conditions that influence the processes of generating novel ideas and turning them into innovations. Furthermore, we develop recommendations for actions to be taken by organizations. In addition, we experiment with interactive formats (see examples at https://h5p.org/) to present and discuss our results.

On top, we are offering interested students the possibility to publish their seminar paper, short film, and other interactive elements such as  quizzes on a UHH blog which is part of the funded project on “Meeting up!”- effektive digitale Zusammenarbeit in und nach Corona”.

Lernziel:
Students of this seminar will learn to

  • critically reflect different concepts, approaches and empirical evidence in studies on managing and organizing innovation and creating novel ideas,
  • derive recommendations for action,
  • present their results in different interactive formats (including seminar paper, pitch of ideas, short films, online quiz, etc.).

Vorgehen:

  • Research-based learning, case studies, practical projects, group work, individual creation of interactive knowledge-transfer elements, presentation and discussion of results
  • 3 synchronous half-day sessions: We are planning face-to-face sessions in compliance with current hygiene regulations. Depending on the situation we may switch to online-meetings. Please save the following dates:

    • Kick-off Session: Tuesday, 3.11.20, 12.00-4.00 p.m.
    • Research Session (project pitch with ppp): Tuesday, 8.12.20, 12.00-4.00 p.m.
    • Vernissage Session (“Film festival”: presenting and discussing the results and recommendations of action): Friday, 12.2.21, 9.00-12.00 a.m.

  • 1 asynchronous session (30 min): Individual recording of short films at the “E-learning office” of the Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences (30-minutes slot per student): Wednesday till Friday, 13-15 January and 20-22 January 2021. Detailed scheduling will be communicated during the course.
  • Submission of seminar paper: Friday, 8.1.21. Students will be given individual feedback by examiners to enhance the film recording (oral presentation).

Zusätzliche Hinweise zu Prüfungen:
Participation in all synchronous sessions is mandatory. In order to pass the course, each student must deliver a seminar paper and an oral presentation. The seminar paper should include a discussion of a chosen innovation topic (approx. . 5 pages), 3-5 Power Point slides containing a script for the recording (approx. 3 pages), and other interactive knowledge transfer elements such as quizzes (approx. 2 pages). In total, the seminar paper should be 10 pages long. The presentation (approx. 5 min.) will be professionally recorded at the E-learning-Büro UHH. The oral presentation may differ from the written script as the presentation should be presented freely. The aim is to delve into an innovation topic and to produce an intriguing short film. The seminar paper constitutes 2/3 and the oral presentation 1/3 of the final grade.

The seminar will be held in English. The written and oral exam can be taken in English or German.
