This seminar is part of an exchange program between the M.Sc. Interdisciplinary Public and Nonprofit Studies at Universität Hamburg and the M.A. Philanthropic Studies at the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana University (https://philanthropy.iupui.edu).

The seminar will take place virtually, composed of 15 PUNO Master students and 15 Lilly Family School students. The lecturers will be Dr. Pamala Wiepking and Dr. Peter Schubert.

The goals of the seminar are 1) to learn about differences and similarities in philanthropic behavior and philanthropic organizations between Germany and the United States, 2) to reflect upon global as well as country-specific trends, challenges, and opportunities in philanthropy and the nonprofit sector and 3) to develop skills in intercultural collaboration and communication through joint student projects.

The seminar will be structured along three distinct topic areas: 1) a comparison of philanthropic behavior, 2) a comparison of organizational forms, and 3) a comparison of particularly salient issues within the nonprofit sector (such as COVID response, homelessness, or refugee integration) across the two countries.

The sessions will offer a mix of input by the lecturers, interactive student discussions, and guest lecturers from Hamburg and Indianapolis.

Timing:

The semesters of UHH and IUPUI overlap between the weeks of May 10 and July 5. During this time, we plan to have synchronous sessions with all students. However, we are aware that for some of you the time slot on Friday might ocassionally overlap with another PUNO course. In these instances, we plan to offer an asynchronous alternative for students.

Assignments:

1. Short ungraded blog post.
2. Group presentation (50%): During the course, we will form mixed student groups (US and German students) working together on a group presentation.
3. Short final essay (50%)

Further details in the form of a syllabus will follow as the new semester approaches.
