NEU: Pilotprojekt zur Anmeldung
In diesem SoSe 24 möchten wir als Pilotprojekt eine neue Anmeldemöglichkeit für kunsthistorische Veranstaltungen des "Kunstgeschichtlichen Seminars" testen.
In der ersten Anmeldephase vom 26.02.24 - 07.03.2024 erhalten Studierende bei jeder Anmeldung zu einer Veranstaltung der Kunstgeschichte in STiNE eine automatisch erstellte "Direktannahme/Direkt-Akzept". Das bedeutet: Sie müssen nicht mehr warten, bis die erste Anmeldephase abgeschlossen ist, sondern erhalten sofort eine STINE-Nachricht mit der Platzzusage zum Seminar.

In his Dialogus Miraculorum, the Cistercian monk Caesarius of Heisterbach (c. 1180–c. 1240) likens (in great and gruesome detail) the passion and death of Christ to the making of a book. Centuries later, around 1500, a member of his order gave this mental image startling, visceral materiality in a prayer book that begins with pages upon pages inscribed not with letters, but wounds (British Library, Egerton MS 1821). While this may sound more than a little strange to modern readers, Caesarius and the later Cistercian both draw on a very long Christian tradition that associates Christ the logos (Lat. verbum, word) made flesh, with the book that contains the words of what was (and is) believed by Christians to be divine revelation: the Bible and, in particular, the four gospels that narrate Christ’s life, death, and resurrection. The notion that a book becomes a body in which its author lives on is one that remains relevant to this day.
This lecture course will investigate what role the close association between the book and the body of Christ played in European artefacts from the ninth century to Early Modern times and beyond. Topics include theological concepts of the Christ-logos and the iconography of the book, and the ‘corporeality’ of medieval artefacts, from the precious gospel books commissioned by the Carolingian and Ottonian nobilities to late-medieval devotional books. We will also turn to the question of how the traces of Christ’s passion on his body were made ‘readable’ to medieval and early modern beholders. How did texts, and how did images mediate between medieval and early modern readers and Christ’s wounds? How did the depictions of Christ’s wounded body change over time, and when depicted for different audiences and contexts? What roles do historical and modern semiotics, art theory, theories of cognitive psychology and notions of gender play in this?
Please note that some of the historical artefacts that will be discussed feature graphic depictions of wounds and violence.
