Comments/contents:
Demographics are at the heart of how populations are created, develop, contract, and expand. How fast or slow a population grows, or expands has important consequences for economy, health, and political tensions. This is true in Southeast Asia, as well as every other country in the world. This seminar is about how the peoples of Mainland Southeast Asia have developed demographically. Among the issues discussed will be the immigration history, historical origins of ethnic groups and nations, and modern population policy in Southeast Asia.
Requirements
This course aims at MA students of Languages and Cultures of Southeast Asia with the track Thai Studies. It is also suitable for MA students of Buddhist Studies with the track Thai Studies. It is also open for BA students as a course of the Fachspezifischer Wahlbereich
Goals
Students will gain an appreciation of the role of demographic change in mainland Southeast Asia. The course will include historical demographics, and contemporary demographic policy. They will participate in the seminar, and present a paper about the demographics of Southeast Asia at the end of the semester.
