If you are not familiar with the Sprachenzentrum (Language Center of the UHH) and our registration requirements, please check our website www.uni-hamburg.de/sprachenzentrum before registering. Here you will find all information and registration requirements.

The most important points in a nutshell:

Registration Requirements

BEFORE you register, you have to prove your language level to us either …
- by taking our placement test (dates on our website under „Placement“)
- or by showing us an OFFICIAL language certificate (such as TOEFL, IELTS, TestDaF, Uni-VHS, etc.).

For example, for a B2 course you have to prove that you have the B2 level. For C1 courses we need prove that you have reached the level C1. The given level is thus not the one you want to reach but the one you already have.

If you register without having proven your level to us, we will remove your registration.

If you have taken our test or shown us a certificate before in a previous semester, you are in our system and do NOT have to take the test again. Please just register for the courses on STiNE.

Once you have successfully finished two courses in one level, you can do courses in the next higher level without taking the test again, if you like.

How does the registration in STiNE work?

There are two registration phases. In the first phase, there are 20 places per course (random selection). In the second phase, there will be 15 additional places (first come, first served).

If you have problems with the registration in STiNE, please contact our main office (room 3047) early. Please be aware that we are a small department and might not be able to reply quickly if we get many questions at the same time.

How can I sign off in STiNE?

During the registration phases and shortly after, you should be able to sign off in STiNE yourself. So if you were accepted for a course but know you will not be able to attend it, be fair and sign off so someone else can take your place.

If you have difficulties signing off on STiNE, please contact our main office. We can sign you off.

Comments/contents:
This seminar series teaches how to write academic texts in English. Taught through a mixture of live online classes (Zoom) and recorded audio seminars (podcast distributed through UniCommSy), each class is accompanied by materials and tasks aimed to cover the key topics: how to write a good introduction, structure the body of an essay, conclude strongly, use paraphrasing, citation, quotation, and more. Each student will also produce a complete (short) essay for the course and get individual feedback to help each participant develop clear, concise, and academically correct texts.
