The most important points in a nutshell:

Registration Requirements

BEFORE you register, you have to prove your language level to us either …
- by taking our placement test (dates on our website under „Placement“)
- or by showing us an OFFICIAL language certificate (such as TOEFL, IELTS, TestDaF, Uni-VHS, etc.).

For example, for a B2 course you have to prove that you have the B2 level. For C1 courses we need prove that you have reached the level C1. The given level is thus not the one you want to reach but the one you already have.

If you register without having proven your level to us, we will remove your registration.

If you have taken our test or shown us a certificate before in a previous semester, you are in our system and do NOT have to take the test again. Please just register for the courses on STiNE.

Once you have successfully finished two courses in one level, you can do courses in the next higher level without taking the test again, if you like.

How does the registration in STiNE work?

There are two registration phases. In the first phase, there are 20 places per course (random selection). In the second phase, there will be 15 additional places (first come, first served).

If you have problems with the registration in STiNE, please contact our main office (room 3047) early. Please be aware that we are a small department and might not be able to reply quickly if we get many questions at the same time.

How can I sign off in STiNE?

During the registration phases and shortly after, you should be able to sign off in STiNE yourself. So if you were accepted for a course but know you will not be able to attend it, be fair and sign off so someone else can take your place.

If you have difficulties signing off on STiNE, please contact our main office. We can sign you off.

Comments/contents:
The study of law is, above all else, the practice of reading and interpreting written documents. The goal of this class is to familiarize students with a variety of different legal documents. In this way, students will gain a working understanding of some of the basic differences between Anglo-American "case law" and the continental European tradition of "civil law" with which they may be more familiar. The class will chiefly draw from the body of American legal texts. Students should build an extensive functional vocabulary of legal English, as well as an appreciation for the differences in legal principles that are reflected in the differing legal terminology.
