Comments/contents:
The course will cover the experimental aspects of data analyses in particle physics. For this a deep understanding of the physics and functioning principles of particle detectors is needed, together with the knowledge of interactions of particles with matter, and of simulation and statistical analyses methods.

Some of the topics covered are the interaction of particles with matter, scintillators and time-of-flight detectors, the principle of gas chambers, silicon detectors, modern calorimetry and detectors for particle identification. Large detector systems as used at accelerators like HERA, the LHC and the Tevatron and the future ILC and XFEL will also be discussed. The particle-flow concept will be introduced, which is used for the reconstruction and identification of particles and jets with a large detector system. The lectures will include methods needed for data analyses, like Monte-Carlo integration, minimisation techniques and statistical interpretations of data.

Learning objectives:
At the end of the course, students will be familiar with modern detection methods in high energy and photon physics. They will have the basis to perform measurements of ionization, position, energy and momentum of particles, as well as particle identification and timing measurements.

In the exercises students will develop a critical capability to discuss plots and scientific results via a journal club. They will learn how to apply the acquired knowledge from the course to use and develop simulation programs (C++ and ROOT). The main component of the exercises is a tutorial in which real data from the LHC are analyzed.
