Comments/contents:
This course is a seminar offered in the Master of International Business and Sustainability.

The seminar first gives an overview of the healthcare industry, its different sectors, their growth strategies and provides examples from practice. In the social discussion, growth per se is not always seen as positive. Against this background, a discussion will be held on the extent to which growth is vital for health companies and how ways can be found to make growth sustainable.

In the course of the seminar, students will then independently develop and jointly discuss current topics and issues of sustainability / ESG (Environment Social Governance) as well as sustainable forms of growth in the healthcare industry. The final step is a form of portfolio assessment that not only functions according to sustainability criteria, but equally supports corporate growth. The consideration of life cycle management concludes the seminar.

Learning objectives:
The aim of the seminar is to sensitise students to the difference between theory and practice in questions of sustainable growth strategies in the healthcare industry. The seminar participants train their ability to reflect critically and learn about the challenges involved in reconciling sustainable and business behaviour in internationally active companies.

Against this background, the following learning objectives, among others, are to be achieved:
- Students gain insights into the healthcare industry and its growth strategies and are simultaneously sensitised to issues of sustainability in international competition.
- Students should be enabled to apply the learned contents to concrete practical problems and to independently evaluate growth strategies and measures of companies with regard to their sustainability.

Didactic concept:
The event will be held in block form, not week by week.

Friday, 04 November 2022, between 13:00 - 18:00 (presence).
On the first day, general basics on the healthcare industry and its growth strategies will be elaborated as well as the relation to sustainability. In addition, the topics for the term papers will be presented and students can express preferences for their own term paper in this kick-off event.

Friday, 18 November 2022, between 16:15 - 19:30 (presence)
Content-wise we discuss a portfolio sustainability assessment tool and life cycle management as a growth and sustainability measure.
In this event, also the presentation topics will be assigned, groups will be formed, and general information on the content expectations for a term paper as well as the formal requirements for writing a scientific paper will be given. The presentation topics will be assigned twice to several times, so that we will hear two, if not more presentations on the same topic.
After 18 November 2022, the writing phase begins (8 weeks – till submission on 13 January 2023), during which students work independently on their topic.

Saturday, 10 December, between 15:00 – 17:30 (online only).
After a three-week familiarisation period, students will have the opportunity to discuss a first draft of the outline and the content with the supervisor on 9 December and also to work on the topic in the group and, if necessary, to exchange ideas with other groups.

Thursday, 12 January, between 18:15 – 20:30 (online only) - VMP 9, Room A411 is reserved in case you are already on campus and like to join the online session
Just before submitting the term paper (13.01.2023), each group will receive brief feedback on request for further preparation of the group presentation. Again, group members can advance their topic together or exchange ideas with other groups.

Friday, 13 January 2023, submission of papers (virtually), papers submitted after that date cannot be considered.

Friday, 27 January, between 16:15 – 19:30 (presence) and Saturday, 28 January, between 10:00 - 16:45 (presence)
On both days, the speakers / groups will present their papers and moderate the subsequent group discussion. On both presentation days, the so-called peer review procedure will be used. Each group will therefore take on two tasks:
- Each group presents its own topic and moderates the associated discussion.
- Each group gives expert feedback to the group working on the same topic as itself.

1. Positive phrasing – provide a positive framework for your message

  • Explicitly identify and positively reinforce what was done well (“sandwich negative comments with two positive ones”)
  • Constructive feedback is based on trust between sender and receiver. Make sure your intention is to be helpful, not to show how smart you are.

2. Concreteness – ground feedback in specific, observable behavior

  • Constructive feedback should be specific and clear, not vague.
  • Prioritize your feedback – focus on the most important areas.
  • Be descriptive rather than evaluative. Describe actions and results you observed; do not judge.

3. Action-orientation – give a specific plan of action

  • Do not explain what you would have done in a similar situation; frame your feedback in terms of your fellow’s teaching, e.g.: “Maybe next time you can try using questions to get the group more involved.”
  • If possible, help the feedback receiver see how the behavior in question affects the classroom and the benefits of addressing this.

4. Focus – provide feedback on behavior that the individual can change

  • Give feedback cautiously, as a personal perception, not as “truth”.
  • Focus your comments on your fellow’s behavior rather than on her/his personality.
