Comments/contents:
Disputes about "migration" repeatedly shape political debates, are used for polarization and trigger social transformation and reflection processes. Terms such as "migration society" or "post-migrant society" refer to the overall social significance of migration processes. In general sociology and sociological theory, however, this is relatively rarely addressed. In this seminar, we will therefore search for traces by examining different approaches to sociological theory and the question of how migration phenomena are treated or faded out in each case. In individual sessions we will discuss texts of classical (Karl Marx, Max Weber and W.E.B. Du Bois) as well as contemporary sociology (Michel Foucault, Abdelmalek Sayad, Stuart Hall, Rosi Braidotti), some of which deal with migration in a central way, others with a more marginal or mediated focus on, among others, "emigration" (W.E.B. Du Bois). on "emigration" (Marx), "mobility" (Urry), "nomadism" (Deleuze/Guattari; Braidotti), "diaspora" (Hall), "racialization" (Du Bois), "coloniality" (Gutiérrez Rodríguez), "strangers" (Simmel; Ahmed), or "established and outsiders" (Elias/Scotson).

In addition to the topic-specific focus, the seminar is designed to expand knowledge of various sociological theories. In doing so, the canonization of approaches and topics in the subject will also be critically reflected. Thus, in relation to current debates on the decolonization of sociology, the question will be raised to what extent a specific framing or structural de-thematization of "migration" shapes sociological theoretical perspectives. In this context, it will be examined to what extent references to migration (and related aspects of mobility, diversity, and inequality) can be more clearly elaborated in sociological theories and how this can strengthen other perspectives in sociological theory beyond a "methodological nationalism" and Eurocentrism; for example, by focusing on the incompleteness, heterogeneity, and global interconnectedness of social contexts as well as related borderlines and conflicts.

Learning objectives:
In the seminar we will learn to elaborate and discuss theoretical approaches in dealing with primary texts and to make them usable for sociological analyses. We will also learn to contextualize the texts in time and space and to reflect on the social situation of the knowledge production associated with the texts.

Didactic concept:
Intensive reading and processing of the seminar texts as well as the willingness to actively participate in the discussion are fundamental. The seminar texts will be made available as PDFs at OpenOlat at the beginning of the semester. They are automatically added to the course via your Stine registration, so that the course appears in the list of your courses, provided that you are registered as a user at OpenOlat.
